The emergence of the variations of our surname appears to be regional as well as time based. As you can see form the following chart of the variations in spelling. These results are based upon the first recorded births of each variation in the OPR records. Obviously there may be some earlier births since their parents are listed with the same surname, yet don't necessarily appear in the search results, and in many cases the father was probably recorded with a different surname variation when they were born than their children were.

CRUIKSHANK is the most prevalent spelling in the earlier years, with CRUIKSHANKS, CRUICKSHANK and CROOKSHANK appearing in the mid 1600's. CROOKSHANKS and CRUICKSHANKS appear in the late 1600's, early 1700's. The distribution of CRUICKSHANKS is also much wider than the other variations, and is the only variation that appears in Angus, Glasgow and Renfrew over this time period.
