There are many variations of the Cruickshanks name in early records as you can see from the table below. The earliest birth entry that I could find in the OPR records was 1574 for a Besse CREWIKSCHANK, and it isn't until the early 1600's that we see some spellings consistent with today's surnames. Today, the most common variants of our name are CRUICKSHANKS, CRUICKSHANK, CRUIKSHANKS, CRUIKSHANK, CROOKSHANKS, and CROOKSHANK, and it easy to see how it has evolved based upon how it sounds.
